Speech by King Willem-Alexander at a reception for the diplomatic corps, Royal Palace in Amsterdam
Ladies and gentlemen,
The Queen and I are delighted to welcome you to the Royal Palace in Amsterdam. We believe it’s important to start off the new year by highlighting our excellent relations with you. For us, this reception is more than just a cherished tradition. It also underscores how much we value your work as diplomats.
The Kingdom of the Netherlands feels a strong responsibility to actively contribute to peace, justice and sustainable development worldwide. That is something we can do only in close partnership with you.
As members of the international community, we all share a deep sense of solidarity with those who are suffering from violence, abuse of power and deprivation. We share grave concerns about conflicts that are impacting the lives of millions of people.
Ukraine is still being subjected to unjustified aggression from Russia. Our hearts go out to all the families affected. The same applies to all the victims in Israel and Gaza. It’s vital we find a way to break the cycle of violence.
In my many conversations and meetings with you, one thing always stands out. Despite the big differences between the countries you represent, the similarities are even bigger. Each one of you is working hard to create a world in which young people can build a bright future for themselves.
This is the case in Africa – a continent with such an abundance of young talent – but it’s equally true all around the globe.
As long as we maintain our focus on this common interest, together we can move forward. We saw that again at the recent UN Climate Change Conference in Dubai, which marked the beginning of the end of the fossil fuel era.
None of this will be easy, but we can do it. Thanks to the diligent work of individuals like you, we can find common ground and make progress.
The Queen and I thank you for your dedication, and we look forward to continuing our outstanding relations with you in the new year.
We wish you happiness and success in your personal and professional endeavours.
Let us raise our glasses to an excellent 2024!
