King to attend UN Water Conference and New York Water Week
His Majesty the King will be in New York on Tuesday 21 March and Wednesday 22 March in connection with the United Nations Water Conference. The importance of water will be a focus all week in New York.
King Willem-Alexander will give a speech on Wednesday 22 March at the opening of the Water Conference. The Kingdom of the Netherlands has organised this conference – the first UN conference on water in almost 50 years – jointly with Tajikistan. The event is meant to contribute to fulfilling international agreements on water issues. Almost every country faces water-related challenges: too much water, too little water or poor quality water. Accordingly a Water Action Agenda will be presented at the conference, including plans and contributions from participating countries, organisations, companies and civil society.
Prior to the conference opening, King Willem-Alexander and President Emomali Rahmon of Tajikistan will host a meeting on Tuesday 21 March for the delegation leaders of all participating countries.
In addition to the UN Water Conference, the King will also participate in several parts of the programme of New York Water Week, organised by the Netherlands and New York City. From 18 to 24 March the city will serve as a hub for raising awareness, drawing attention to best practices and exchanging innovative ideas to guarantee clean, safe water in the future.
