King Willem-Alexander to visit various hydrogen projects in Spain
On Tuesday 13 June and on the morning of Wednesday 14 June His Majesty the King will visit Madrid and the Spanish autonomous communities of Castilla-La Mancha and Andalusia. His Majesty King Felipe of Spain will attend several parts of the programme. Minister for Climate and Energy Policy Rob Jetten will also take part in the visit.
The focus of the visit is on hydrogen as an important energy carrier in the energy system of the future. In order to further strengthen and give substance to cooperation in the field of hydrogen, various Dutch businesses and knowledge institutions will take part in the visit.
International cooperation aimed at knowledge exchange, stimulating supply and demand, and building infrastructure for hydrogen transport and storage is essential to developing the hydrogen market and the infrastructure required. Spain is set to be a key supplier of green hydrogen in Europe; hydrogen which can then be exported to north-western Europe via Spanish and Dutch ports. These kinds of import and export corridors within Europe help consolidate security of supply.
In 2019 King Willem-Alexander opened HyStock, the first large-scale green hydrogen facility in the Netherlands. At the Wind Meets Gas symposium (2021) he spoke about the importance of hydrogen for the Netherlands. He has also paid visits relating to this topic to Delft University of Technology (2021), Industrial Park Kleefse Waard, the Port of Rotterdam and various projects in the North Sea (2022).
