Queen Máxima to visit New York and Washington DC to promote financial inclusion
On Thursday 11 January Her Majesty Queen Máxima will be visiting the United Nations in New York before travelling on to Washington DC to visit the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank Group on Friday 12 January. She will be taking part in discussions about the progress of her work as United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Advocate for Inclusive Finance for Development (UNSGSA).
In New York, Queen Máxima will speak with a range of officials, including UN Secretary-General António Guterres and head of the UN Development Programme Achim Steiner. She will also meet with her staff at the office of the UNSGSA for internal discussions. In Washington DC, she will speak with IMF director Kristalina Georgieva and President of the World Bank Group Ajay Banga, and attend a meeting with the members of the Reference Group she works with. This focus group comprises 11 international development organisations working around the world to promote financial inclusion.
Queen Máxima has been UNSGSA for 15 years. Since 2009, she has been working worldwide on behalf of the UN to make financial services available to all, including low-income groups and small and medium-sized enterprises, thus enhancing their opportunities for economic and social development. Queen Máxima has been honorary patron of the G20 Global Partnership for Financial Inclusion (GPFI) since 2011.
