Personal flags
The personal flags of members of the Royal House, like their coats of arms, are established by Royal Decree.
Role of personal flags
Personal flags or standards are flown on a car or sometimes an aircraft during official visits. If the member of the Royal House is in the Netherlands, his or her personal flag may be flown above their home. The flag of the reigning monarch is also known as the royal standard because of its shape (square rather than rectangular and never in swallowtail form). Personal flags and the royal standard are never flown at half-mast. In times of mourning they may be flown with a black pennon.
Queen Máxima
Queen Máxima uses a swallowtail flag of Nassau blue, divided into four quarters by an orange cross. In the centre are the arms of the Kingdom surmounted by a crown. The bugle-horn from the arms of the House of Orange is in the upper left quarter, and the tower from the Zorreguieta arms in the lower left quarter.
Princess Beatrix and her sisters
Princess Beatrix and her sisters use an orange swallowtail flag divided into four quarters by a cross of Nassau blue. In the centre are the arms of the Kingdom surmounted by a crown. The bugle-horn from the arms of the House of Orange is in the upper left quarter, and the rose from the arms of the House of Lippe in the lower left quarter. Since abdicating, Princess Beatrix has reverted to this flag, which was created for her as a princess in 1938.
The Princess of Orange and her sisters
The Princess of Orange and her sisters will not have personal standards until they reach the age of 18.
Prince Constantijn and his brothers
Prince Constantijn uses a square orange flag divided into four quarters by a cross of Nassau blue. In the centre are the arms of the Kingdom surmounted by a crown. The upper left and lower right quarters carry the bugle-horn from the arms of the House of Orange and the upper right and lower left quarters carry the white castle from the Van Amsberg arms.
The same flag was used by his brother Prince Friso, who died on 12 August 2013, and by King Willem-Alexander before he ascended the throne.
Princess Laurentien
Princess Laurentien uses a swallowtail flag of Nassau blue, divided into four quarters by an orange cross. In the centre are the arms of the Kingdom surmounted by a crown. The bugle-horn from the arms of the House of Orange is in the upper left quarter, and the yellow lozenge from the Brinkhorst arms in the lower left quarter.
